IELTS Test
IELTS test is an exam to evaluate non-native English speakers’ knowledge of English.
Are you going to use English in a business or academic environment?
You probably need IELTS.
Your IELTS score shows how much you are capable of using English in public, at work and in universities.
A large number of colleges, companies and governmental organizations in the UK, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand now accept IELTS.
IELTS test is held in GENERAL and ACADEMIC modules.
You need an Academic IELTS if wish to continue your studies in a foreign country.
You need a General IELTS if you are traveling for non-academic business purposes.
Speaking Section
The speaking section of IELTS test evaluates candidates’ interaction, accuracy and fluency in speaking. This section takes 11 to 14 minutes, including 3 main parts:
In part 1, candidates answer a few personal questions about their life, work and free time activities for 4-5 minutes.
In part 2, candidates are given a card with a topic, and are asked to express their views on that topic for 2 minutes.
In part 3, candidates get into a 4-5-minute discussion with the examiner about the topic on the card.
Listening Section
The listening section in IELTS test has 4 parts, including 10 questions each.
Questions in the listening section include multiple choice, short answers, sentence completion, marking maps and matching.
Candidates are allowed to listen to the recordings ONLY ONCE.
There is a 10-minute break after the listening section.
Reading Section
The Reading section is different in general and academic modules; however, both contain 3 parts and 40 questions.
Questions in the first part can be answered by mediocre English knowledge, while parts 2 and 3 are more complicated.
Candidates have 20 minutes to complete each part. No extra time is given to candidates.
Academic Module
Questions in Academic Reading section vary in forms and include multiple choice, matching, completing charts and summarizing.
Texts are often extracted from textbooks, journals and newspapers. The texts are always written in an academic context.
In case there are technical words and phrases in texts, a short glossary will be given to candidates.
General Module
Part 1 in General Reading might include 2, 3 or more short texts. Part 2 consists of 2 texts and there is one long text in part 3.
These questions include multiple choice, matching, completing information, charts and short-answer questions.
Writing Section
Similar to Reading section, Writing section has General and Academic Modules, including 2 parts each.
Candidates are given 60 minutes to complete the Writing section.
In either module, candidates have 20 minutes to complete task 1 and 40 minutes for task 2.
In task 1, candidates write a 150-word essay about the information given in a table or chart.
In task 2, a question is asked and candidates need to write a 250-word essay, expressing their opinion about the question.
IELTS Test Scores
Each section has a score between 0 to 9.
The overall score is the average of all 4 scores.
IELTS Mock Test
IELTS is an international test only held in official centers.
However, many English Institutes, including Iran-Europe, hold regular IELTS mock tests to prepare candidates for the main test.
Mock Tests are great chances to test your English skills and realize where you really stand.
